TradeBuilder Core 2016 Edition is a major upgrade to the series that adds Williams Percent Range (%R) to its integrated indicator toolbox, increasing the total number of compoundable indicators to 13. Williams %R can be successfully used in, both, trend-following and momentum play (scalping) scenarios.

Featured market: Aussie/Dollar (AUD/USD) 15-minute chart. Signals based on TradeBuilder Core strategy compounding: Williams %R, Double MA Cross, RSI, Parabolic SAR, Force Index, and Market Bias (filter)

New Integrated Indicator: Williams Percent Range (%R)

Williams %R is a type of momentum indicator that compares last price close level relative to the highest high for a certain period of time as specified by the user (see Period parameter below). Technically speaking, Williams %R is the direct inverse of the Fast Stochastic oscillator, meaning it can be compounded with Core's Stochastic integrated indicators to essentially produce a dual Stochastic strategy - perhaps one that validates stochastic-style rules at different period (smoothing) levels.

When it comes to application, Williams %R is one of the more reliable momentum indicators, and is typically used to gauge trend momentum as well as oversold/overbought conditions i.e. scalping opportunities. Larry Williams (the creator of this oscillator) often used it with double moving averages, but we recommend you try it with Stochastic, Parabolic SAR, Force Index, or RSI.

Trading rules: long (buy) signal issued when %R oscillator line moves above UpLimit. Short (sell) signal issued when %R moves below DownLimit. A lot of traders just use -50 level cross as a long/short threshold, but you can avoid a lot of false signals if you create some distance between long and short levels.

New TradeBuilder Core Parameters:

IndWPR: activates Williams %R oscillator and makes it available for compounding with Core's other 12 integrated indicators.

Period: the number of historic periods (such as bars) the oscillator will consider in its calculations. Higher period values yield smoother oscillator lines and are hence recommended for trend-following strategies, while lower period values produce a much more responsive but volatile oscillator - ideal for scalping strategies based on momentum play (overbought/oversold levels).

UpLimit: Level that %R needs to cross (from below) in order to qualify for a buy signal. Range: 0 to -100.

DownLimit: Level that %R line needs to cross (from above) in order to qualify for a sell signal. Range: 0 to -100.

As touched upon earlier %R UpLimit and DownLimit values are effective gauges of trend strength, especially with periods set greater than 14 (preferably 28). When the 28-period %R moves above -20 (bullish) or below -80 (bearish) it typically remains there for an extended period of time, at least until the trend strength weakens. With period set to less than 14, -20/-80 become overbought/oversold levels, and could potentially be used for some quick scalping.

We'll start off TradeBuilder Core 2016 Edition's Williams %R demonstration with a simple trend-following strategy, utilizing just the %R oscillator: Period @ 35; Uplimit @ -2; Downlimit @ -98. As evidenced by the screenshot, the signals are pretty good even when solely using %R with no other indicator. Next, we will observe what happens when we compound some of Core's other integrated indicators with %R.

The GBPUSD H1 example below showcases Williams %R in another real-world strategy application, specifically in regards to improving trend-following signal quality (filtering). The first screenshot shows a strategy based on Double MA Cross, CCI, Force Index, Average True Range - without %R applied. The second screenshot demonstrates what happens to performance when %R is added to the strategy mix (Period @ 90; Uplimit @ -40; Downlimit -60). The filtering effects are clear - remember, the higher the period, the more aggressive the filtering. Ideally you want to strike a balance like we did below, sacrificing a bit of lag in return for much improved accuracy and profitability (win:loss ratio).

Is there an Expert Advisor (EA)?

TradeBuilder Core is an indicator (not an EA) that issues real-time signals on your chart and to your email address as well as smartphone. You may have noticed that our other indicators such as MarketScalper PRO, TrendSuite, and TradeBuilder Classic now include optional Expert Advisor add-ons for auto-trading, back-testing, and optimizing strategies based on their algorithm. So why is there no EA for TradeBuilder Core? The answer is in its positioning. TradeBuilder Core is our lowest-priced, entry-level trading framework and we feel that offering an EA add-on that costs as much as the indicator itself would take away from its position as a value product. If you still need an EA for a TradeBuilder Core strategy then we suggest you consider upgrading to TradeBuilder - Classic Edition. Classic version comes with 3 times as many integrated indicators as Core and includes an optional EA add-on. For a limited time, we are offering all Core clients, both, upgrade to Classic (with a lifetime upgrade license) and the Classic EA for $500 (normally the EA alone is $450). Contact us if interested.
