The Anatomy and Key Features Of Pivotbuilder

  • Pivots Adapt to Real-time Price Action
Traditional support/resistance levels lag and do not take real-time price behavior into consideration. PivotBuilder Personal Trading Suite's institutional-grade algorithm enables traders to construct customizable pivot lines that follow and adapt to price action as it emerges.

  • Build Powerful Pivot-Based Strategies That Work
PivotBuilder's algorithm takes user input (volatility, deviation, period, and moving average type, etc.) and constructs up to 7 Pivot Lines (plus the Trigger Line) optimized for the market you are trading. The Indicator component draws the pivot lines, while the ShowMe component helps you choose and display short/long conditions based on the line interactions configured. Subsequently, ShowMe issues signals based on your input. At bare minimum, those signals come in form of colored dots, with additional options to setup pop-up, audio, and email alerts. The 4 Strategy components are used to setup auto-trading order rules (long enter, long exit, short enter, short exit), optimize values (selection of input values based on past or walk-forward performance), back test and forward test strategies, and configure money management conditions. Furthermore, users can extend PivotBuilder's capabilities or integrate it into existing trading systems via included PivotBuilder API function.

  • Full Versatility: Scalp or Follow Trend
PivotBuilder Personal Trading Suite is completely versatile, capable of creating or adapting almost any pivot-based strategy. With just a few parameters, traders can configure the software to issue high-probability scalping signals, based on high deviation band crosses, or setup filtered trend-following signals that avoid choppy markets.

  • Volume Filtering
The volume filtering capability allows users to incorporate investor interest and participation into signal calculations as well by weighing (anchoring) price with volume. The filter relies on 2 volume components: upticks for Long (bullish trend strengthening) or Short Exit (bearish trend weakening) signals and downticks for Short (bearish trend strengthening) or Long Exit (bullish trend weakening) signals. Volume filtering is available in PivotBuilder's signal-generating add-ons, namely ShowMe/Alerts and the 4 strategy components: Long-Entry (LE), Long-Exit (LX), Short-Entry (SE), and Short-Exit (SX).

Signals (and associated orders) will not be generated unless, both, pivot crossover and volume conditions are met (in addition to momentum filtering, if active). Volume filtering is especially useful during quiet, consolidating markets with low investor interest.

The following example demonstrates Volume Filter in action. First screenshot is an intraday, trend-geared PivotBuilder setup without any volume filtering, while second screenshot shows the same setup with filtering of 200,000 upticks/downticks applied. Featured market: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) 5-minute chart.

  • Hull Moving Average
PivotBuilder offers Hull moving average type on top of existing 4 (Simple, Exponential, Weighted, Triangular). PivotBuilder's Hull MA (HMA) features a square root-derived weighted algorithm that improves responsiveness (i.e. avoids lag) while maintaining line smoothness, making it ideal for pivot crossovers. HMA is available in each of 8 line configuration sections (7 Pivots + Trigger).

TradeStation Example: E-mini (@ES) 1-min, all lines set to Hull MA (Trigger period = 5, Pivots = 75-500), Volatility applied

  • Advanced Money Management
In addition to PivotBuilder-specific trade exit conditions (LX, SX add-ons), traders can also manage their orders by activating one or more standard exit conditions, including Take-Profit, Stop-Loss, and Trailing Stop orders. These are fully integrated within PivotBuilder's LE and SE add-ons, presenting traders with contextual money management capabilities.

Trailing Stop Orders: E-mini S&P500 (CME: ES), 2-minute Chart

More information on PivotBuilder's Trailing Stop feature is available here.

    Stop-Loss Orders: E-mini S&P500 (CME: ES), 15-minute Chart

    Take-Profit Orders: SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY), 3-minute Chart

More information on PivotBuilder's Take-Profit and Stop-Loss features can be found here.

  • Flexible Order Sizing and Advanced Filtering
PivotBuilder's Flexible Order Sizing allows traders to specify the number of units, contracts, or shares they would like to buy, sell, or cover for individual pivot level interactions.

Aside from weighing order size based on line interactions, traders can also apply the built-in Stop Loss filter, allowing them to qualify only those signals that represent a higher probability pivot cross.

The ES (E-Mini S&P500 futures, 4-min) screenshot below demonstrates both features. The Indicator add-on was added solely as a visual aid - with only 2 (out of possible 7) pivots active for the sake of simplicity. The third, green line, is the Trigger line.

All 4 PivotBuilder strategy add-ons have the Stop Order Filter active, with filter value set to 0.10. In plain English, we want:

    • Long entry (LE) signals where Trigger line (green) crosses over Pivot1 (blue) and where price exceeds the Trigger line by at least 10 cents.
    • Short entry (SE) signals where Trigger line (green) crosses under Pivot1 (blue) and where price is lower than Trigger line by at least 10 cents.
    • Long exit (LX) signals where Trigger line (green) crosses under Pivot6 (yellow) and where price is lower than Trigger line by at least 10 cents.
    • Short exit (SX) signals where Trigger line (green) crosses over Pivot6 (yellow) and where price exceeds the Trigger line by at least 10 cents.

These conditions will filter choppy (consolidating) price action, helping lock in greater profits, minimize losses, and avoid criss crossing. The left side of the screenshot demonstrates one such scenario - a price thrust (green line briefly crossing over blue) was effectively filtered.

Custom position sizing is also evident. Note the number below each order. All entry orders (LE and SE) are set to open 9000 units, whereas exits (LX and SX) are set to 6000 and 5000 units respectively. The first SX to the left of the screen takes profit on first 6000 units, leaving 3000 in the market, eventually covered by the subsequent LE. The same LE opens 9000 long units. Subsequent LX takes profit on 5000 longs, with the other 4000 covered by the soon-to-follow SE.

Set-up and Operation

PivotBuilder takes only a minute to install and its operation is as simple few mouse clicks.
  1. Go to Insert Analysis Techniques dialog and click on the Indicator tab. Scroll down to PivotBuilder Personal and add it to your chart. The Indicator component serves as a visual aid, helping you draw and analyze pivots before deciding on your strategy. To build a strategy based on the Trigger line and its interaction with the configured Pivots add the ShowMe component by going back to Insert Analysis Techniques windows, clicking on the ShowMe tab and adding PivotBuilder Personal (ShowMe)

  1. When presented with the Format PivotBuilder Personaldialog, either press OK to use the defaults, or change values to suit your strategy's preferences.

  1. PivotBuilder has been programmed to be as ergonomic as possible. For example, if you wanted to apply a specific setting to all envelopes (lines), rather than change them individually, activate any of the global parameters by changing their status from False to True and inputing the global value. The following parameters can be configured and applied on the global scale: Volatility, Period, Deviation Value, Deviation Rate of Stepping, Displacement, Moving Average Type, Line Pierce Alerts.

  1. You may additionally set up Alerts (Pop-Up, Audio, and Email) by going back to the Format Indicator window, clicking on Alerts and ticking Enable Alertsoption.

  1. After visually testing your PivotBuilder strategy based on ShowMe signals (dots), use the 4 Strategy components to optimize and/or test (historic or walk-forward) your strategy's performance. Go to Insert Strategy dialog and add PivotBuilder strategy components to your chart. Set up their parameters to mirror your ShowMe/Indicator settings, and configure TradeStation®strategy properties with desired back-testing rules.

You may additionally wish to set-up automatic order execution (trading) based on your PivotBuilder strategy. To do so, go to the Format Strategies dialog, and tick "automate execution".

  1. (optional) As previously mentioned, PivotBuilder is fully pluggable into any other TradeStation/MultiCharts add-on. All you need is the source code of the target add-on, and a few lines of code to control individual PivotBuilder line parameters. The usage of API is fully documented in the manual and on our User Community Forum.

Scenario: you have the RSI Indicator code open, and would like to expand the alert ruleset to include following conditions:

    1. Long: The RSI line crosses over OverSold limit and PivotBuilder’s Trigger line is below Pivot line 1.
    2. Short: The RSI line crosses under OverBought limit and PivotBuilder’s Trigger line is above Pivot line 1.

Here’s what’s going to happen (using Short condition as example):

Original RSI Alert code before Integrating PivotBuilder:

if MyRSI crosses over OverSold then
Alert( "Indicator exiting oversold zone" )
else if MyRSI crosses under OverBought then
    Alert( "Indicator exiting overbought zone" ) ;

Recall, MyRSI variable represents the RSI curve, OverSold is the oversold limit, and OverBought is the overbought limit.

RSI Alert code with PivotBuilder integration:

if MyRSI crosses over OverSold and oLine0 < oLine1 then
    Alert( "RSI > OverSold & PB Trigger < Pivot1" )
else if MyRSI crosses under OverBought and oLine0 > oLine1 then
    Alert( "RSI < OverBought & PB Trigger > Pivot1" );

RSI variables remain the same, but now we’re also incorporating PivotBuilder variables that control the Trigger line (variable called oLine0) - red thick line in the screenshot - and Pivot1 (oLine1) - magenta line in the screenshot. In other words, we're effectively compounding functionality and effects of 2 analysis techniques: PivotBuilder and RSI. You don't have to utilize all PivotBuilder lines when integrating it with other add-ons - just the ones you need for your setup.

  • Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) $0.5 Momentum Bar

This scalping strategy is ideal for quick market action - especially around session opens. The 2 lower envelopes (period: 125, volatility applied, auto-displacement applied) are used to open or add to long positions, while the upper two are used to open or add to short positions. PivotBuilder was also programmed to issue warnings (smaller blue/yellow ShowMe dots) when price crosses above Green (overbought limit) and under Blue (oversold limit) envelopes.

  • Alcoa Inc. (NYSE:AA) 100k Share Bar

This strategy has 2 sets of displaced envelopes: slow-moving (conservative) and fast-moving (aggressive). The conservative envelopes (green, white, aqua) are used for opening (or adding) short and long positions, while the two aggressive envelopes are used for closing them. The upper fast-moving envelope (yellow) adapts to climbing price action (displaced positively) and is used for closing long positions as soon as market consolidates/retraces. The lower fast-moving envelope (magenta) adapts to falling price action (displaced negatively) and is used for closing short positions as soon as market consolidates/retraces.

  • Dow Jones Industrial Index (TradeStation:$INDU) 45-min Chart

This more complex strategy takes advantage of the Triangular Moving Average - 1 of 6 available Moving Average types within PivotBuilder. This particular MA type is smooth (double-averaged) and adaptive, making it ideal for volatile markets like the DJIA. The strategy has 2 components: trend-following, and scalping. The Trend envelope (white) is used for opening long (when trigger line (red) crosses from below) and short (when trigger crosses from above) positions. The other 2 highly deviated envelopes represent statistical extremes - overbought (magenta) and oversold (green) levels that continually adapt to changing price action. These two lines can either be used to close positions opened via Trend line cross, or to scalp price action, capitalizing on retracements, thrust reversals, and swings (in ranging market conditions). We scalp long when trigger (red envelope) crosses green (oversold envelope) from below, and scalp short when trigger crosses magenta (overbought envelope) from above. Just like with any scalping strategy, we would use take-profit/stop-loss limits - or, alternatively, add more pivot envelopes (via PivotBuilder) to use for exiting positions. All individual conditions (signals) pertaining to line interactions (crosses) are set-up directly within PivotBuilder's Indicator, ShowMe, and Strategy components. Each line cross can be configured to act as either a long, a short, both long+short (depending whether line is crossed from below or above), or a pierce signal.

  • U.S. Dollar - Yen (FOREX:USDJPY) 3-min Chart

This strategy involves setting up an equally displaced pivot line "grid" around price action. It makes use of all 7 configurable pivot envelopes within PivotBuilder (white line; 3 above it; 3 below it), plus the trigger line (red). As trigger line (representing smoothed price action) crosses/oscillates through different pivot grid levels, we either open or add to long/short positions. If any of the 7 lines are crossed from below, a long signal is issued. Inversely, trigger crossing lines from above yields a short signal. If take-profit/stop-loss limits or trailing stop are not used, we can optionally use line crosses to close profitable positions when signals change from long to short and vice versa. Each of the 7 pivot lines (envelopes) has their own alert settings, so you can select any envelope to alert any line interaction (signal).

  • Sample Strategy Performance E-Mini S&P 500 Futures (CME:ES) 50-cent P&F

    Strategy Settings:
    Initial capital: $100,000
    Commission: $7/trade
    Trade size: 10 contracts (fixed)

This premium PivotBuilder strategy is available as a free download (in form of workspace) to all PivotBuilder clients. The strategy, configured to detect specific swings in price, is based on a 50-cent, single-bar reversal Point and Figure chart. It provides steady, linear returns with relatively low drawback.

  • PivotBuilder API Function Add-on: Integrating PivotBuilder into the RSI oscillator - EUR/USD (FOREX:EURUSD) 1-min

The chart above shows PivotBuilder calculating and drawing lines based on the RSI curve. Since we're essentially gauging price momentum, the interaction of RSI-derived pivot lines often proves to be a leading indicator. When using the PivotBuilder API function, the process of integration of the two add-ons took less than 3 minutes. The PivotBuilder + RSI code is available for download to all PivotBuilder customers.

Gray - RSI line (Period: 5), thick red - PivotBuilder's Trigger line, green - mid-pivot, thin red - upper pivots, blue - lower pivots, magenta - fast moving upper pivot, cyan - fast moving lower pivot, dotted yellow - RSI middle (50), overbought (70), oversold (30) limits.

  • Indicator Add-on: Intel Corp. (NASD:INTC) Daily

    • In the above sample setup, we would open long positions when the Trigger (thick red line) crosses over the orange pivot line and short positions when the Trigger crosses under it. Long positions would be closed upon Trigger piercing the thin red pivot line, while short would be closed upon Trigger piercing the thin blue line.
    • We could add/deduct stock to our long/short positions by also trading the Trigger/cyan line crosses in the same manner as trigger/orange.
    • Scalpers would open short positions when Trigger crossed under thin red line (upper statistical extreme i.e. overbought territory) and long positions when Trigger crossed over thin blue line (lower statistical extreme i.e. oversold territory).

  • Signal Add-ons: Google Inc (NASD:GOOG) Daily

Both, the TradeStation Strategy module and the MultiCharts Signal module, enable traders to extensively back-test, walk-forward, and optimize their setups/settings - even auto-trade them if so desired. When attaching Signal add-ons to your charts, set up their parameters to mirror your Indicator/Alerts add-on settings. Back-testing, optimization, and auto-trading can be configured via Strategy Properties window.

PivotBuilder Personal Trading Suite comes with 4 individual strategy (i.e. Signal) components, each intended for a specific type of market order. LE = Long Enter (PivotBuilder Signal add-on for entering long trades); LX = Long Exit (exiting already-open long trades); SE = Short Enter (entering short trades); SX = Short Exit (exiting already-open short trades). You don’t have to use all 4 strategies if you don’t need to. For example, you may wish to continually stay in the market, which would entail using just the LE and SE strategy components.
