TradeBuilder - Classic Edition v7.0 introduces an all-new integrated indicator, bringing the total to 27, adds a new Overbought/Oversold mode, and expands indicator's alert options. The EUR/USD H1 example below showcases TradeBuilder Classic's performance based on many of the integrated indicators added in versions 5 through 7.

Featured market: EUR/USD 1-hour chart, trend-seeking configuration: Double Moving Average Cross (Exponential/Smoothed), Relative Vigor Index, Money Flow Index, Ichimoku Kinkō Hyō, Force Index, and the Volume filter. The phone icon indicates that Push to Phone notifications are enabled.

The Relative Vigor Index (RVI), originally introduced in 2002 by a popular technical trader, John Ehlers, is an oscillator intended to measure price movement "energy" (hence the name vigor). It does so by tracking the distances between market open and close prices over a specified period of time. Values above 0 indicate an up-trending market while values less than 0 suggest a prevalence of sellers. LONG (BUY) signal issued when RVI moves above UpLimit. SHORT (SELL) signal issued when RVI moves below DownLimit. RVI oscillator is comprised of 2 lines - Main and a 4-period averaged Signal line. You can choose either as your main signal trigger (see Mode parameter below). Ehlers suggests that Main should be over Signal in an uptrend and under in downtrend. TradeBuilder Classic incorporates this rule into calculations, but you can choose to ignore it by setting the Consider_Signal_Line_Cross parameter to FALSE (see below).

PeriodRVI: Period of oscillator.

PeriodRVI: Indicator line index - selects either Main (value of 0) or Signal (value of 1) line for UpLimit/DownLimit crossovers. Default: 1 as it is smoother.

UpLimitRVI: Level that RVI needs to cross over in order to qualify for a BUY signal. Range: +/- unbounded, 0 is middle.

DownLimitRVI: Level that RVI line needs to cross under in order to qualify for a SELL signal.

Consider_Signal_Line_Cross: When set to TRUE (default) Classic issues BUY signal only when RVI line is above UpLimit and RVI line is above the slower Signal line. SELL signal is issued when RVI is under DownLimit and RVI is under Signal line. RVI line depends on Mode parameter above.

In summary, LONG signal is assured to be issued when RVI moves above UpLimit, and SHORT when the oscillator moves below DownLimit.

RVI is a very capable momentum-riding oscillator, not only in combination with other indicators but even on its own or with an accompanying filter. The USD/JPY M15 example below demonstrates just that, using only Volume as the synergistic filter. The two work well in concert, with RVI detecting trend in price behavior, and the other confirming with underlying participant interest (volume).

The Relative Vigor Index can be used to generate scalping and/or exit signals when applying TradeBuilder Classic's OB/OS mode. Use RVI's oscillator extremes to capitalize on statistical outliers such as extremely high positive (buying) or negative (selling) momentum; thrusts.

To use RVI in OB/OS mode, first set Classic's OverBought_Sold_On parameter to TRUE to activate the mode globally (OB/OS icon in the top-right of chart will turn orange). With OB/OS mode active, typical Period value is 10, UpLimit is -0.2 (oversold i.e. BUY signal), DownLimit is 0.2 (overbought i.e. SELL).

The USD/CAD M5 example below demonstrates TradeBuilder Classic v7 with just the RVI indicator active - but while applying Classic's global Overbought/Oversold (OB/OS) mode. Settings are: Period 7, up/down limit -0.4/0.4. We're using more extreme oscillator values to target higher probability trades.

OB/OS mode is intended for scalping or closing already-open trades, so make sure you apply Take Profit/Stop Loss limits. Do not trade OB/OS arrow to arrow.

The full list of TradeBuilder Classic integrated indicators that take advantage of the OB/OS mode includes: Relative Strength Index (RSI), Commodity Channel Index (CCI), Stochastic Oscillator (STO), Williams %R, Bollinger Bands (BB), DeMarker Indicator (DEM), Money Flow Index (MFI), Relative Vigor Index (RVI) and the Market Outlook Filter Short/Long term (MKT-S/L).

On top of visual (arrow), pop-up, audio, email, and push-to-phone alerts, TradeBuilder Classic v7 now also gives users the option to sync visual signals with alerts. Up until now, the default behavior has been arrow positioning above/below bar where signal condition (based on trader’s compounding of indicators) was detected, with alerts issued at the start of the following bar. You can now have visual signals appear at condition+1 bar, concurrently with other alerts. See TradeBuilder Classic’s manual, section 4.4.24.

We restructured some of the code in Classic v7, yielding an increase in technical performance. The signal calculation speed has gone up by 25%, bringing signal processing to the average of 5000 bars/second.

The manual, now 36 pages in length, has been revised to cover RVI (section 4.3.23) and other new features (section 4.3.24).
